The Medical Waste Management Act defines “Medical Waste” as biohazardous or sharps waste and waste which is generated or produced as a result of the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings/animals, research pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings/animals, production/testing of biologicals, or the accumulation of properly contained home-generated sharps waste. Environmental Health and Safety provides the following guidelines for Medical Waste.
We provide cardboard biohazard boxes and red bag liners for use in collecting medical waste. These items are included in the costs of our medical waste services. Please do not cause damage to these boxes by rough handling. Transporters are prohibited, by regulations, from picking up damaged containers. Damages to the boxes could result in delays, added fees, and costly injuries to any employee handling the boxes.
Do not discard individual or loose sharps into the cardboard boxes. Sharps containers must be used for sharps waste. Once full, smaller sharps containers must be placed in the cardboard box containers. Please refrain from using inappropriate containers such as disposable drinking water bottles, glass jars, etc..
Please do not throw medical waste around/outside the red bag liner; this will cause the box to get soiled and subsequently damaged. Make sure the liner bag is always in place when the box is in use. All Medical Waste must be placed inside the red bag liner then inside the cardboard box; please do not place Medical Waste or Sharps Containers inside the cardboard box without first being placed into the red bag liner.
Biohazard disposal containers must have sufficient room to be able to close the flaps on the top of the box and operate the built in handles. DOT regulations require that our containers are properly enclosed for transport on public roads. Overfilling also causes structural instability of the cardboard boxes. These boxes are tested and rated for less
than 40 pounds, overweight boxes may break or tear open causing medical waste to be spilled onto floors or other surfaces. Proper disinfection of these areas will be necessary should a spill occur. Your company may be liable for injuries or illnesses caused by improper packaging or overfilling of these boxes. Any cardboard boxes found to be unable to properly close due to overfilling will be repackaged into additional cardboard boxes, as per regulations, and additional special handling and/or repackaging fees may be applied. Any boxes that are properly closed yet found to be in excess of 40 pounds will be charged an additional fee for overweight special handling and/or repackaging.
State regulations require that the storage of medical waste must be in a secure manner and in a location that affords protection from theft, vandalism, inadvertent human or animal exposure, rain, water and wind. The waste must be managed so as not to provide a breeding place or food for insects or rodents, and not generate noxious odors. However, keep in mind that drivers run a tight schedule, and collect from many locations each day. The easier it is for drivers to access your properly packaged waste, the less time it takes to collect your waste, and this helps to keep our prices low!
Our technicians are only allowed to pick up waste that is stored in safe, approved containers. These include: our cardboard biohazard boxes for Medical Waste and "approved" Sharps Containers. Any Medical Waste given to our technicians in unapproved containers will be repackaged into approved containers and applicable special handling and/or repackaging fees may be applied.
In order to keep our prices low, we are only able to pick up waste that has been collected and stored in approved containers and placed in one location. After the cardboard boxes are full, please tie and place the liner inside and fold the box containers using the top flaps exposing the handles. We do not provide room-to-room collection services.
Sharps containers should never be overfilled. This will cause needles to fall out of the sharps containers due to improperly closed lids. Your company may be liable for any injuries resulting from improper waste disposal.
Although, not required, sharps containers should be taped closed to secure both the locked opening and the lid. This will help to ensure that no sharps will fall out of the containers during handling and transport. Your company may be liable for any injuries resulting from improper waste disposal practices.
Do not place any liquid into the containers that have not been evaluated and documented by the customer as non-hazardous waste. We are not licensed to transport chemicals or bulk liquids. Absorbent material should be added to any liquids to prevent any leakage.
