Regulated Medical Waste is defined as any solid waste, generated in the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals, in research pertaining to or in the production or testing of biologicals, but does not include any hazardous, chemical, or radioactive waste.

What can't be placed into the Medical Waste Box?

  • Closed and tied red bag waste
  • Closed and locked disposable sharps containers
  • Leak proof containers of small volume liquids
  • Soft red bag waste, including but not limited to: gauze, medical tubing, blood soaked items, intravenous bags, soft plastic items, gloves, gowns, masks, bandages, etc.

What types of waste are not collected by Bio-Ops?

What can't be placed into the Medical Waste Box?

  • No hazardous (chemicals) or radioactive waste
  • No loose liquid in excess of 20cc
  • No loose syringes or needles
  • No glass items
  • No loose hard plastic items, such as pipettes or culture dishes


Basically: If it can puncture the red bag liner, it should be placed in an approved sharps container.

  • All needles and syringes
  • Hard plastic pipettes and tips
  • Glassware items including but not limited to: test tubes, vials, bottles, slides, vacutainers, etc.
  • Items made of metal, razor blades, scalpels, knives, tweezers, scissors, etc.

What types of waste are not collected by Bio-Ops?

  • Chemicals (bulk) – Formaldehyde, acids, alcohol, waste oil, solvents, reagents, fixer developer.
  • Hazardous Waste – Drums or other containers with a hazard or toxic warning symbol, batteries, heavy metals etc.
  • Radioactive Waste – Any container with a radioactivity level that exceeds regulatory or permitted limits; lead containing materials.
  • Human remains – Cadavers, aborted fetus.
  • Bulk Chemotherapy Waste.
  • Compresses gas cylinders, canisters, inhalers, and aerosol cans.
  • Glass thermometers, or other devices or solutions containing mercury.
